If you want to begin helping your mouth look better following gum disease treatment, one of the first treatments recommended is gum reshaping. This is a procedure where your gums are reshaped, typically with a laser, to look more natural.
Some people who have oversized gums also opt for this procedure to create longer looking teeth, giving them a more esthetic smile. Here is what your periodontist will do.
Reshaping ProcedureBefore anything is done, your dentist is going to create an image of your mouth currently. They should be able to show you on this image, what your mouth would look like after the procedure, so you have an idea of what to expect. Once you have agreed upon the look, the procedure can be scheduled.
Your dentist will take the laser and set it to cut back your gums to the specific location that you two agreed on. Since they are using a laser, you should not experience much, if any, discomfort. You should also have nearly no bleeding. Any bacteria on your gums or teeth that touch the laser will instantly be destroyed.
Your dentist is then going to follow the same natural curve being created on all of the teeth in your mouth, or as many as need treatment. You may have slight swelling when the procedure is over, but that should dissipate quickly. You will instantly be able to see the results of the procedure, and your mouth will recover over the next few days.
Not only will your smile look better, it should also be healthier. Talk to your dentist or periodontist about what type of benefits your mouth would get from this procedure. If you both feel that enough benefits would be present, then take the next step and get the procedure done.
